Historic restorations.

Company description…

Building Hugger is a woman-owned construction company focused on preservation trades and reinvestment services. Our mission is to empower architectural stewardship by providing affordable, sustainable solutions that preserve architectural character. Currently, most of our work is historic window and door restoration, but we also offer other preservation trade services, historic tax credit consulting and building design services.

I started my business because…

While redeveloping an auction property in 2012 I couldn’t find any tradespeople to do basic window repairs, so I took a historic window trades training and the rest is history.Historic trades and apprenticeship programs are dying off. This has left a gap in the market where competent tradespeople are difficult to find, which due to scarcity drives up costs. As the new trends in real estate seek reinvestment in historic urban neighborhoods, the preference is often restoration over replacement. We are developing a scaled service that can meet the needs of this growing market.

What makes my company unique…

Name one woman you know personally that started her own construction company from the ground up because she cared deeply for the historic buildings in her struggling city and wanted to ensure that homeowners and developers had the proper trade resources to save these structures. It’s pretty rare, I’d guess…

Mantra I live by…

The most important opportunities exist when things don’t go according to plan. Lean into those skids.

Top 3 goals for my business are…

  1. Be the go-to Detroit resource for out of state and first time property buyers looking to invest in the city
  2. Expand our construction services to include other dying trades, such as masonry and decorative tile
  3. Establish our Hug Factory storefront as a local resource for hard to find tools and hardware for our DYI clients. And eventually, bring this shop online!

Women entrepreneurs are…

Bringing varied skills to the table – focus on those you hold naturally!
