Anita's Yogurt in the signature plain flavor.

Company Description…

Anita’s Yogurt was founded in September 2013 by vegan chef Anita Shepherd. It is made with organic coconut milk, organic coconut water, and live cultures. We have a devoted customer base that is hooked on our probiotic product for the unparalleled health benefits, incredibly rich texture, and real yogurt flavor.

I started my business because…

I created the yogurt to use as an ingredient in my dessert recipes. Simultaneously, I was looking for a way out of the chef world where work is grueling and salaries are notoriously low. When word got out about the yogurt, demand increased, and I realized this was my way out. In 2013, I finally perfected the recipe and started selling it in a few stores. Since then, I’ve had many fans tell me that this yogurt has changed their life. The fact that I can share all the positive impact of live cultures in a nondairy product with no additives makes me happier than anything else in the world. Work is still grueling, but I love every second of it.

What makes my company unique…

We are the only additive-free, sugar-free, non-dairy yogurt on the market. It is made locally in Brooklyn, New York and the company is woman owned and operated.

Mantra I live by…

Get back up and keep going.

You should vote for me because…

I started this business from nothing. In the beginning, industry experts told me it would be impossible to make my product without additives. But I tried anyway. I do not give up no matter how unlikely odds of success are.

Top 3 goals for my business are…

  1. Go national in 2017.
  2. Start making our own coconut milk in 2017.
  3. Make the product organic, fair trade and higher in protein.

Being a Tory Burch Foundation Fellow would allow me to…

Experience a sense of community and surround myself with the support I need to get a foothold in the national marketplace. It would provide the opportunity to do some more forward thinking. As an entrepreneur, I get caught up in the day to day and have to sometimes step back to think strategically.
