About the Business

Hozhonigo Consulting is a Native woman-owned firm serving sovereign Tribal Nations and Native-led organizations across the United States. We address longstanding underinvestment in Indian Country by helping communities secure funding, strengthen organizations, and carry out their priorities. Our work spans broadband infrastructure, child care facilities, economic development, small business support, Native language revitalization, and Indigenous maternal health. Through fundraising and development planning, grant services, strategic partnerships, and project management, we connect community priorities with resources and support implementation. We help build durable organizations and grow local economies from within so Native communities can thrive for generations.

Onawa Haynes

Onawa L. Haynes is a Native American (Diné and Mescalero Apache) entrepreneur from Gamerco, New Mexico. She left a six-figure nonprofit role and health insurance to build Hozhonigo Consulting, using her legal training and funding expertise to help her people.

Without a clear model for the business she envisioned, Onawa forged her own path. What began with helping Tribal Nations and Native organizations pursue funding grew into a firm offering strategic planning, organizational support, and project management. Across her career, she has helped secure more than $200 million in funding.

Seeing communities lack access to funding expertise also led her to create the free Tribal Funding Registry, now operated through the separate nonprofit Hozhonigo Institute.

Her company is grounded in Hozhónígo, a Diné lifeway of honoring ancestors through how people live today and building a good path for the next seven generations. With a JD from UNM and an MBA in American Indian Entrepreneurship from Gonzaga, Onawa is building a business rooted in culture and creating possibilities for other Native women. She is also a wife, mother of two, and dog mom to Loki.
