I’m pledging to #EmbraceAmbition because…

I want to inspire, motivate, and encourage others to never give up and to keep striving toward their goals and dreams in life.

What does Ambition mean to you personally?

To me ambition means dreaming big, setting the necessary goals, then working hard to accomplish those goals in order to make those big dreams come true.

I discovered my passion for gymnastics when…

My older sister started teaching me some gymnastics. I had so much fun learning and she would teach me all types of skills from forward rolls to handstands to cartwheels. From there, my passion and love for the sport just grew.

Describe a time when you were most tested. What would you want other women to learn from your experience?

This past Rio Olympics not accomplishing the result that I wanted and then experiencing all of the online bullying I received was one of the hardest trials I’ve gone through in my life. My advice to others would be to never let defeat crush you or allow what others say about you define who you are. Don’t allow yourself to remain in a state of defeat. It can be easy to stay stuck in past failure. Ignore negativity, use that experience to learn, and then grow from it. Trust me, you will be stronger for it!

Advice for women who shy away from their ambitions.

Shying away from your ambitions will lead to regret. I almost made that mistake in 2012 right before the London Olympic Games, when I wanted to quit. If I had, I would have never accomplished my ambition to make history and would never have become an Olympic All Around Champion.

Ways I stay motivated to achieve my goals…

My faith and the support of my family is what keeps me motivated. We constantly encourage and support each other. I believe a strong support system is important. I know I definitely wouldn’t be where I am without mine.

3 tips for staying strong (in sports and life)…

  1. Have faith and know that you can accomplish anything you set your mind to.
  2. Don’t overwhelm yourself! Just take it one step and day at a time. Make each moment count.
  3. Always persevere and never lose hope. Don’t ever let an obstacle stop you, always keep moving forward, learning, and growing.

Advice for focusing on the positive…

Always keep in mind that negativity never accomplishes anything, it will only drag you down and waste your time. So just don’t even bother with it! Choose to be positive and productive instead.

Strong female role models in sports will…

Show you what is possible when you choose to persevere.

The woman that inspires me…and why?

My mom. She is probably the strongest and most caring woman that I know and she encourages me every day to do better and be better.
