About the Business
KAHINDO is an ethical luxury occasionwear brand designed in New York and handcrafted by female artisans in Africa. We create bold, African-inspired dresses, jumpsuits, and eveningwear for wedding guests, bridesmaids, mothers of the bride and groom, and anyone dressing for a milestone moment. Every piece is made using fair-trade production practices that provide dignified, sustainable income to the women who craft them.
KAHINDO exists to prove that fashion can be both beautiful and responsible — that customers don't have to choose between luxury and ethics. Rooted in Congolese heritage and inspired by the Sapeur movement, our collections celebrate craftsmanship, women's empowerment, and joyful self-expression. Fashion That Looks Good, Feels Good & Does Good.
Kahindo Mateene
Kahindo Mateene is the Founder and Creative Director of KAHINDO, an ethical luxury occasionwear brand designed in New York and handcrafted by female artisans in Africa. Born in Uganda to Congolese parents and raised across Kenya, Ethiopia, Niger, and Nigeria before settling in the U.S., Kahindo brings a global, multicultural lens to every collection. She launched KAHINDO in February 2017 to prove that fashion can be both beautiful and responsible — pairing bold, African-inspired prints with modern silhouettes for weddings, celebrations, and milestone moments. Her design point of view draws from the Sapeur movement of Congo, her heritage, celebrating elegance, dignity, and self-expression through style.
A Project Runway Season 12 alumna and 2021 Tory Burch Fellow, Kahindo has grown KAHINDO from a scrappy startup into a brand recognized by Vogue, Elle, The New York Times, WWD, and Essence, with wholesale partnerships including Anthropologie, Nordstrom, and Rent the Runway. Guided by her mission — "Fashion That Looks Good, Feels Good & Does Good" — she continues building a brand rooted in craftsmanship, women's empowerment, and fair-trade production.
